Blues & Roots $13.96 In response to critical carping that his ambitious, evocative music somehow didn’t swing enough, Charles Mingus returned to the earthiest and earliest sources of black musical expression, namely the blues, gospel, and old-time New Orleans jazz. The resulting LP, Blues and Roots, isn’t quite as wildly eclectic as usual, but it ranks as arguably Mingus’ most joyously swinging outing. Working with simple forms, Mingus boosts the complexity of the music by assembling a nine-piece outfit and arranging multiple lines to be played simultaneously — somewhat akin to the Dixieland ensembles of old, but with an acutely modern flavor. Anyone who had heard “Haitian Fight Song” shouldn’t have been surprised that such an album was well within Mingus’ range, but jazz’s self-appointed guardians have long greeted innovation with reactionary distaste. After Blues and Roots, there could be no question of Mingus’ firm grounding in the basics, nor of his deeply felt affinity with them. Whether the music is explicitly gospel-based — like the groundbreaking classic “Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting” — or not, the whole album is performed with a churchy fervor that rips through both the exuberant swingers and the aching, mournful slow blues. Still, it’s the blues that most prominently inform the feeling of the album, aside from the aforementioned “Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting” and the Jelly Roll Morton tribute “My Jelly Roll Soul.” The recording session was reportedly very disorganized, but perhaps that actually helped give the performances the proper feel, since they wound up so loose and free-swinging. With a lineup including John Handy and Jackie McLean on alto, Booker Ervin on tenor, frequent anchor Pepper Adams on baritone, and Jimmy Knepper and Willie Dennis on trombones, among others, Blues and Roots isn’t hurting for fiery soloists, and they help make the album perhaps the most soulful in Mingus’ discography. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi |

Bobby Valentino $14.99 It’s easy to imagine R&B crooner Bobby V. stretched out on a crimson, crushed-velvet couch as he delivered his self-titled debut. This pillow-talky album must have been recorded with candles filling the recording studio, but you can bet there was the faint smell of patchouli too. The singer’s first full-length has mystical touches in its overall slick and sexy production, touches that help separate the album from the competition in a way the everyday songwriting doesn’t. Pan flutes, atmospheric interludes, and French women cooing sweet nothings flesh out the album, an album that’s 99.9 percent “for the ladies,” save an appearance from his main man, Ludacris. As limited as this sounds, Bobby V. and producers Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson make the album seem a lot more diverse than it really is by alternating the “let’s get busy right now” numbers with the “you’re very special, let’s take this slow” numbers. That otherworldly production helps a lot too, as does the singer’s committed delivery, sounding like he’s not at all tired of this sensual material, so why should you be? His Babyface-like voice is above average without a theatrical edge but with a charismatic street swagger and just the right touch of humble joy. As they would say in the tech world, “Slow Down” is the killer app, a single good enough to buy the whole album. Past the single, Bobby Valentino the album doesn’t disappoint, but it is a bit frustrating when the smart music and bold “Real R&B Singers Needed” sign point to grander possibilities. Of course, it is a debut and, considering that, pulling a daring punch or two is forgiven. Broken Boy Soldiers $14.99 It’s hard to call the Raconteurs a genuine supergroup since there’s only one true rock star in the quartet: the White Stripes’ eccentric mastermind Jack White. Sometime between the recording of the Stripes’ 2003 breakthrough Elephant and its willfully difficult 2005 follow-up, Get Behind Me Satan, White teamed up with fellow Detroit singer/songwriter Brendan Benson to write some tunes, eventually drafting the rhythm section of Cincinnati garage rockers the Greenhornes as support. Lasting just ten tracks, their debut, Broken Boy Soldiers, doesn’t feel hasty, but it doesn’t exactly feel carefully considered, either. It sounds exactly as what it is: a busman’s holiday for two prodigiously gifted pop songwriters where they get to indulge in temptations that their regular gig doesn’t afford. For Benson, he gets to rock harder than he does on his meticulously crafted solo albums; for White, he gets to shed the self-imposed restrictions of the White Stripes and delve into the psychedelic art pop he’s hinted at on Elephant and Satan. Both Benson and White are indebted to ’60s guitar pop, particularly the pop experiments of the mid-’60s — in its deliberately dark blues-rock, Elephant resembled a modern-day variation of the Stones’ Aftermath, while Benson has drawn deeply from Rubber Soul and Revolver, not to mention the Kinks or any number of other ’60s pop acts — so they make good, even natural, collaborators, with Brendan’s classicist tendencies nicely balancing Jack’s gleeful freak-outs. Appropriately, Broken Boy Soldiers does sound like the work of a band, with traded lead vocals and layers of harmonies, and no deliberate emphasis on one singer over the other. Even if there’s a seemingly conscious effort to give Brendan Benson and Jack White equal space on this brief album, White can’t help but overshadow his partner: as good as Benson is, White’s a far more dynamic, innovative, and compelling presence — there’s a reason why he’s a star. Broken Record $16.98 Songwriter Lloyd Cole has had his share of ups and downs. After releasing the bona fide classic Rattlesnakes and the truly fine Easy Pieces in the 1980s with his band the Commotions, Cole jumped from Universal to Capitol, where he cut his self-titled solo album and the critically acclaimed Don’t Get Weird on Me Babe. Neither sold. He moved to Rykodisc for two albums before slipping out of sight in 1995 for the decade’s remainder. He returned in the new century and released independent albums every couple of years, but they went mostly unnoticed. Cole quietly disappeared again after 2006’s Anti-Depressant. In 2009, he emerged again and appealed to his small but dedicated fan base for help in financing a new album. Broken Record, released in Europe in late 2010 and in the U.S. in the middle of 2011 is the result. The gamble paid off in spades creatively. Recorded in Manhattan with Commotions’ keyboardist Blair Cowan, session drummer Fred Maher, guitarists Mark Schwaber and Matt Cullen, among others, Broken Record is small in scope, but full of crafty hooks, wry, self deprecating humor, and genuine irony. Cole’s lyric panache is enhanced by this solid meld of classic singer/songwriter-ish pop, country-tinged rock, and crystalline production. The album’s first single, “Writer’s Retreat!,” is a jangling rocker with mandolins, harmonica, 12-string guitars, popping snares, the biting, opening line: “When you get back from the writer’s retreat/I won’t be there waiting”, and the killer refrain: “You can get a beat from a broken heart/You can write the book fallin? apart/You can have it all but the one you want/Just going for a song.? “That’s Alright” is another scintillating pop/rock number that deals with the end of a relationship in a more biting manner, but the wordsmithing is so top-notch it doesn’t sound like sour grapes. “Westchester County Jail” could have come right out of the Commotions’ catalog. It may be that Stevens’ recent experiences had contributed to his sense that he was running out of time. Though he was never a directly confessional writer, one got the sense that his disaffection with the life of a pop star was reasserting itself. And while he was touring unhappily around the world, the world was still going to hell in a handbasket. Yet Stevens was still motivated by his urge to help mankind mend its ways. Love provided some comfort, but for the most part, the singer who had seemed so excited on his last album now sounded apprehensive. Stevens set his reflections to a mixture of musical styles that included traces of old English folk songs, madrigals, and Greek folk music along with more typical rock stylings, all performed with the stop-and-start rhythms that added drama to his performances. Nevertheless, Catch Bull at Four was a more difficult listen than its three predecessors. Coming off the momentum of Teaser and the Firecat, it roared up the charts to number one, but stayed in the Top Ten fewer weeks than its predecessor. Fans who had been stirred by Stevens’ rhythmic tunes and charmed by his thoughtful lyrics were starting to lose interest in his quasi-religious yearnings, busy arrangements, and self-absorbed, melodramatic singing. Dreamland $13.96 Dreamland is the second volume in Joni Mitchell’s self-compiled series of “theme” retrospectives. The first, issued on the Geffen label, was entitled The Beginning of Survival. It focused on songs that dug deep into social, cultural, political, and environmental themes, as “commentaries on the world in which we live.” Dreamland was compiled from her Asylum, Reprise, and Nonesuch years and focuses, for lack of a better term, on the jazzier side of her catalog musically, including songs with lyrics are all highly imagistic in their makeup. Most are dealing with love and life in the process of moving through it. From “Free Man in Paris” and the title track, to “In France They Kiss on Main Street,” “Come in From the Cold,” “Help Me,” and of course, “You Turn Me on I’m a Radio,” these songs turn the tide for the listener from the place of observing love to the terrain of being caught up in it, where everything is hyperreal and the senses are heightened. The other, tempered side of love is offered with the orchestral version of “Both Sides Now” and “For the Roses.” But there are other songs, too, like “Furry Sings the Blues,” which paints a nocturnal landscape of the blues past, as visited by the protagonist in dreaming, or travel as an other reality in the orchestral reading of “Amelia,” or in “California.” In each instance, the view of reality presented is distorted, either by memory, the acute hypersensitivity of the heart, or by the notion of displacement. All of these strains weave a new terrain from Mitchell’s oeuvre. The package is, once again, a delight, featuring a fine appreciation by Cameron Crowe, and reproductions of ten of Mitchell’s paintings. While the material here has all been released before, as has always been the case with Mitchell’s work, context is everything. Four years after they conquered Mexico with “Asi Es la Vida” (a wry, rhumba-inflected breakup song that spent three months on the national Top Ten charts) and about a year after lead singer Reyli Barba quit to go solo, the members of the reconstituted quintet proved themselves undeterred in their mission to become, in the words of bass player Luis Alberto “Gordito Tracks” P? rtela, “the most important band in Mexico. Better than Molotov.” Nominated for a Latin Grammy in the Best Pop Album by a Group with Vocal category — Molotov’s own nomination was for Best Rock Album, and former frontman Barba also made the list with his solo hit, “Amor del Bueno” — Elefante vindicated Elefante’s insistence that their sound is the product of five musicians, not just one. But truth be told, new lead singer Jorge Mart? nez, formerly of a band from Ciudad Juarez called Caos, does share much of his predecessor’s vocal range, sweetly husky timbre, and awe-inspiring Berlitz Language School diction. And with guitar player Rafael L? pez continuing to shoulder most of the songwriting responsibilities, the album’s 12 original tracks seem cut from the same quirky cloth as Elefante’s previous hits. That’s not a bad thing at all. Falling Farther In $11.98 October Project’s second album, like their first, is dominated by gorgeous harmonies and sweeping string arrangements. But it’s also a smidge more lively than their self-titled debut — David Sabatino’s guitars are allowed let loose a little more frequently, and the comparatively energetic percussion incorporates a bit of Latin spice. The first single, “Sunday Morning Yellow Sky,” combines a typically intense, soaring chorus with an unusually lighthearted jam featuring harmonica and funky guitar riffs. But the meat and potatoes of October Project are still the achingly poignant melodies, tunes so emotionally stoked one can’t help but wish to hear them more clearly, or feel them more fully. That can be a bit exhausting after repeated listens, and the keyboard-heavy arrangements are occasionally overwrought, but in proper doses there is no catharsis like October Project. The band broke up after touring in support of this album. Perhaps the next project for tunesmith Emil Adler and his lyricist/playwright wife, Julie Flanders, should involve musical theater. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that’s the only hint of girlishness here; her writing — and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit — is sharply, subtly crafted and the music is softly assured, never pushing its hooks too hard and settling into a warm bed of guitars and keyboards. Like many country-pop albums of the 2000s, the pop heavily outweighs the country — there aren’t fiddles here, there are violins — yet Fearless never feels garish, a crass attempt at a crossover success. Swift’s maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there’s nothing at all diva-like about Swift on 2008’s Fearless: she’s soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Figments of Emancipation [Bonus Tracks] $18.98 Starved for affection, yet marching deliriously on, the most critically cudgeled British band of 1976 released their second album just six months after their debut Late Night Movies, All Night Brainstorms, almost as if they’d never read a word that had been written about them. And certainly as if they never cared about any of them. Figments of Emancipation is so much the son of its predecessor that the two could have been recorded in tandem. They were certainly written so — most of the album was present in the Doctors of Madness’ live set even before they recorded Brainstorms. Whereas that album haunted the city of the damned, however, Figments is a less modest and, in consequence, considerably less inhumane set. The self-aggrandizing “Doctors of Madness” is an arrogantly swaggering sucker punch, while the sharp segue between the opening “Brothers” and “Suicide City” effortlessly echoed the medley effect which conjoined Late Night Movies’ opening suite — only without the sweeter passages to lighten the lurch. There’s also room for a couple of love songs, however, and even beneath its affirmative surface, “Perfect Past” is nothing short of gorgeous tenderness. “Marie and Joe,” on the other hand, packs a heartbreak so real it has to be autobiographical, and a pain so bitter that you’re not sure you didn’t live it yourself. Where Figments falls down, then, is not in the songs, but in a less easily definable manner — the sense that it really was simply offcuts from the debut, neither conceived nor initially intended to be placed together on a single platter. By that token, its U.S. release as one half of a double album (accompanied by Brainstorms, under the title Doctors of Madness) probably makes more sense, although one cannot help but wonder — the Brits didn’t care for the Doctors of Madness, and the band was one of their own. Five Leaves Left $10.99 It’s little wonder why Drake felt frustrated at the lack of commercial success his music initially gathered, considering the help he had on his debut record. Besides fine production from Joe Boyd and assistance from folks like Fairport Convention’s Richard Thompson and his unrelated bass counterpart from Pentangle, Danny Thompson, Drake also recruited school friend Robert Kirby to create most of the just-right string and wind arrangements. His own performance itself steered a careful balance between too-easy accessibility and maudlin self-reflection, combining the best of both worlds while avoiding the pitfalls on either side. The result was a fantastic debut appearance, and if the cult of Drake consistently reads more into his work than is perhaps deserved, Five Leaves Left is still a most successful effort. Having grown out of the amiable but derivative styles captured on the long-circulating series of bootleg home recordings, Drake assays his tunes with just enough drama — world-weariness in the vocals, carefully paced playing, and more — to make it all work. His lyrics capture a subtle poetry of emotion, as on the pastoral semi-fantasia of “The Thoughts of Mary Jane,” which his soft, articulate singing brings even more to the full. Sometimes he projects a little more clearly, as on the astonishing voice-and-strings combination “Way to Blue,” while elsewhere he’s not so clear, suggesting rather than outlining the mood. Understatement is the key to his songs and performances’ general success, which makes the combination of his vocals and Rocky Dzidzornu’s congas on “Three Hours” and the lovely “‘Cello Song,” to name two instances, so effective. Fun $13.96 Daniel Johnston’s major-label debut is, arguably, his finest moment. With considerable help from Butthole Surfer Paul Leary, Johnston has never sounded so self-assured or confident before. Some of the songs are more polished, but they’re never slicked up to such a degree that this sounds like a user-friendly approximation of Johnston’s style; in fact, there are plenty of tracks that return Johnston to the keyboards (“Delusion & Confusion” and “My Little Girl”) for his freewheeling, primitive workouts. Gardens $16.98 Though Gardens hail from the greater Detroit area, if they decided to move to Austin or Brooklyn, judging from the sound of their debut self-titled record, they? d fit right in. The trio has the look of Brooklyn with their oversized glasses and garish shirts, but more importantly, they share a reverb-y clatter that is standard BK issue. Their snotty attitude and wiry guitar attack is straight Texas, though you could also throw a little Tennessee into that equation. There? s barely any Detroit in the mix, though a cast of Motor City heroes (like Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive and Ko Melina of the Dirtbombs) are on hand to help out. Sounding like the city you hail from isn? t really all that important, except as a marketing tool, though (and most importantly) the band combine their geographical and sonic influences into something that sounds pretty fresh. The production is focused but still loose, the songs are hooky but not overly structured, and the performances are energetic and tossed-off sounding at the same time. It? s an appealing approach that really takes off when the songs are super good. About half the record fits this bill. On tracks like the catchy-as-get-out “Maze Time,” the alternately slow-grooving and slow-grinding “Ideas to Use,” or the rocked-out “Staring at a Line is Not Always Fine,” the band comes very close to hitting on all cylinders. The rest of the album either rushes by in a wave of snarl and snark, or shambles past like a shaggy dog with nowhere important to go. No matter what, though, it? s an engaging listen, and Gardens ends up being pretty much all you need from a debut; an attempt to find a unique sound, a handful of sticky tunes, a bunch of energy and fun.
