Are Subliminal Messages Powerful Enough to Change Your Life?

The phenomena of subliminal messages is a subject that is as fascinating as it is controversial. They were originally developed for advertising, by doctors who used in-depth psychological research, to find out how to reach into our psyche and manipulate our choices and desires.

We are no longer just pawns moved around by the whims of Madison Ave. advertising. We can now choose to infuse our mind with subliminal messages that purportedly help us create the kind of life that we would really like to live! Technology has revolutionized our lives. It has not only given us the ability to produce our own videos, music and send emails, it has also given us the power to reclaim the sanctuary of our subconscious mind.

Before we address the main issue of whether subliminal messages are effective or not, it’s probably a good idea to define exactly what they are, and how they’re supposed to work.

Subliminal messages can be hidden in visual imagery, music or any other sensory media.  They operate beneath the threshold of our awareness. These covert messages rely on something called subliminal perception, which is variously known as — unconscious processing, sub-threshold learning, preconscious perception, and subception.

The subliminal threshold between your conscious and unconscious mind, between what you are aware of and what you aren’t, is very subjective. What is beyond the range of your perception could be within the range of someone elses. This subjectivity not only depends on the person but also on the environment.

Imagine walking down a dark ally in a ruff part of town, your senses would be at their peak and much more alert than normal, especially if you compared it to when your sitting in your living room watching a movie. This subjective nuance is only one of the many reasons why science has had a devil of time studying subliminal perception, and testing the effectiveness of subliminal messages!

How can you define and measure something that is always changing, a threshold that is different for different people, at different times and places? Even if you could, which I doubt, then what procedures could be used to to measure the effects of subliminal stimuli, which are also varied and subjective? This is perhaps the reason there has been misinformation and controversy, brewing around the subject of subliminal messages since the 1950’s.

Subliminal Messages and the Quantum Leap of Neuro-Science

The traditional procedures of neurocognitive science have given us a lot to be grateful for, but when it comes to subliminal messages they seem to be out of their league. Remember science only provides us with a map, one view of reality. It could be argued that when it comes to consciousness, we would better off reviewing the wisdom of ancient civilizations, who for thousands of years, studied and developed highly skilled practices that were closely related to the mysteries of consciousness. Even the term consciousness is ill defined today. However for our purpose, we’ll use the term consciousness in the context of ‘conscious awareness’.

You will find that this article is not written in the academic language, it’s written for people like you and me, who want clear and simple answers to clear and simple questions.To paraphrase from Plato’s Cratylus, ‘If you demand to much precision you’ll enfeeble my might’. Plato is referring something that your probably already familiar with: ‘don’t miss the forest for the trees’.

So let’s follow his advice, and take a look at subliminal messages from a wider perspective, a perspective that crosses many fields and includes not only the startling new breakthroughs in biology and neuro-sciences, but also in quantum mechanics.

First off, when you think about it, much of what is vital to our existence, happens below the threshold of our awareness. The human body is beautifully orchestrated. Every cell, tissue and organ is a masterpiece of divine engineering. Your miraculous body/mind is in accord with a deeper level of intelligence, an intelligence that is absolutely subliminal, an intelligence far below the threshold of your awareness.

It is this intelligence that drives the 45 to 70 trillion cells that compose your body. Can you imagine trying to consciously control each cell? Even though I rarely use the word impossible, I am sure you’ll agree that it’s absolutely impossible for anyone to control their cells, especially when you consider the fact that each cell goes through one million chemical reactions every second. However, I do believe we can consciously influence them. A belief that as you will see, is strongly supported by the new developments in biology.

The same is true when it comes to the area of our mind, most of what’s going on is subliminal and under the radar of our normal consciousness. Whether you’re aware of it or not, your brain is simultaneously processing and filtering a massive amount of information. The vast majority of this data is subliminal and you only absorb it unconsciously.  

You may be surprised to find out, that out of the 400,000,000 bits of information that we are exposed to every second, we are only aware of around 2000.

It is easy to see that we live the greater portion of our lives unconsciously, in the subliminal realm. With this in mind, and considering the millions and millions of dollars that are poured into subliminal advertising, don’t you think it is a safe bet that subliminal messages do work?

Even though old school scientific thought, has been largely ineffective when it comes proving whether subliminal messages are effective or not! Neuroscience has recently experienced a number of startling breakthroughs that are revolutionizing our entire understanding of what life is. The inroads that are being made are so astounding, that they not only provide strong theoretic support for subliminal effectiveness, they go much further, and suggest in the words Dr. Bruce Lipton, that:

“science is in the process of shattering old myths and rewriting a fundamental belief of human civilization. The belief that we are frail biochemical machines controlled by genes, is giving way to an understanding that we are powerful creators of our lives and the world in which we live.” (Quoted from his paradigm-busting book, The Biology of Belief)

Traditional science may be busting at the seams and still largely inconclusive regarding subliminal messages. On the other hand, the informal experiments that I’ve come across, and there are many, suggest that subliminal messages do indeed have the power, to influence and change our perceptions and ultimately our lives. This is also bearing out in the practice of some psychologists, who are use subliminal messages therapeutically. These innovative physicians have been getting extraordinary results.
