Grand Funk Lives $13.98 Rising like a Phoenix, which was the title of one of their previous albums, perhaps Mark Farner is sending a subliminal message with opening track “Good Times” that his “Bad Time” is over? The song “Testify,” track three, sums up this very good album from Mark Farner, Don Brewer, and bassist Dennis Bellinger replacing the MIA Mel Schacher. It’s a hooky rock tune with Farner’s religious overtones. All these tracks are strong, from “Can’t Be With You Tonight” to the glorious ending of “Wait for Me.” The no-nonsense production of manager Andrew Cavaliere — shades of Terry Knight! — and Bob Destocki, lets Farner and Brewer shine. This album is like a subdued version of the Grand Funk classic Survival. In fact, both Survival and Grand Funk Lives are underrated, not just among Grand Funk fans. Where the first Mark Farner solo album, produced by Dick Wagner, had more of a bluesy feel in 1977, and 1978’s Flint by Brewer and company sounded like a stab in the dark, this collection rocks. “Queen Bee” has riffs taken from Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, specifically the ending of the song; “Black Sabbath meets Heep’s “Easy Livin’,” with Farner’s pop influences glossing it up. “We Gotta Get out of This Place” has more in common with a hard-rocking Young Rascals than the Animals or David Johansen. “Y.O.U.” is almost there, halfway to a hit, missing the strength of producers Jimmy Ienner, Todd Rundgren, heck, even Frank Zappa might’ve lifted this track into the Top 40. The restrained production on the rest of the album is a plus except for “Y.O.U.,” which needed just a bit more. “Stuck in the Middle” is fun Mark Farner, and is perhaps the best track on this excellent outing. Heavy keyboards, a great hook, and thick chorus — a nice sequel to Funk’s 1975 hit “Bad Time.” “Greed of Man” goes back to the harder preaching of original GFR. Happy Birthday $13.98 Happy Birthday may be bedroom lo-fi from the fuzzy sound to the scribbled cartoon cover art, the buzzing guitars to the off-kilter subject matter of the songs, but they transcend any limitations of the style (real or imagined) by writing songs that would be great no matter how they were recorded. Their self-titled album is full of alternative universe radio hits from start to finish, “Girls FM” being the standout but only by a nose. Unlike many bands who have used the lo-fi excuse to record half-finished ideas and pass them off as songs, Kyle Thomas writes tightly structured tunes with hooks and dynamics that borrow from sources like the mid-’60s British Invasion, early-’90s American indie rock, and radio hits from the ’50s onward but end up sounding pretty unique. That being said, Thomas and his co-horts Ruth Garbus and Chris Weissman aren? t afraid to steal the occasional bit here and there along the way; the drum sound on “Subliminal Message” from Tom Petty? s “Don? t Come Around Here No More,” the guitar riff on “Perverted Girl” from Weezer? s “Buddy Holly,” the atmosphere on “I Want to Stay (I Run Away)” from every moody 80s song about escape, the wackiness of the Elephant 6 crew on the psych-y “Pink Strawberry Shake.” These references are fun to pick out and catalog, but they provide only fleeting glimpses of the outside world. For most of the album, the trio exists in a hermetically sealed world (like a bedroom), where every move they make is the right one, every sound they layer into the songs is perfect, and every melody makes you glad they let you into their world. Once you? re in, songs about teenage Eskimo girls, bad skin, and milkshakes make total sense. Especially when they are sung in Thomas? wonderfully snotty, pleasingly innocent voice and wrapped in vocal harmonies. Juju [Bonus Tracks] $13.98 One of the band’s masterworks, Juju sees Siouxsie and the Banshees operating in a squalid Wall of Sound dominated by tribal drums, swirling and piercing guitars, and Siouxsie Sioux’s fractured art-attack vocals. If not for John McGeoch’s marvelous high-pitched guitars, here as reminiscent of Joy Division as his own work in Magazine, the album would rank as the band’s most gothic release. Sioux and company took things to an entirely new level of darkness on Juju, with the singer taking delight in sinister wordplay on the disturbing “Head Cut,” creeping out listeners in the somewhat tongue-in-cheek “Halloween,” and inspiring her bandmates to push their rhythmic witches brew to poisonous levels of toxicity. Album-opener “Spellbound,” one of the band’s classics, ranks among their finest moments and bristles with storming energy. Sioux’s mysterious voice emerges from dense guitar picking, Budgie lays into his drums as if calling soldiers to war, and things get more tense from there. “Into the Light” is perhaps the only track where a listener gets a breath of oxygen, as the remainder of the album screams claustrophobia, whether by creepy carnival waterfalls of guitar notes or Sioux’s unsettling lyrics. “Arabian Nights” at least offers a gorgeously melodic chorus, but only after that the band performs a symphony of bizarre wailings and freaky imagery. As ominous as the cacophony is on its own, close attention to Sioux’s nearly subliminal chants paints a scarier picture. A passage such as “I saw you…a huge smiling central face with eyes and lips cut out but smiling and eating lots of other lips” doesn’t exactly brighten one’s day. Sioux is full of such quips throughout the album’s running time, but her delivery packs as much punk as her message. Her attack-the-world dynamic range on “Voodoo Dolly” predates and out-weirds Bj? rk’s similar styling years later.
